Thinking of Faraway Places

blog_12_mar_2014I’m getting ready to pack my toothbrush and camera bag and head for parts afar.  I’m looking forward to a change of scenery, new faces, new places and something to excite my camera’s eye.  I’d still put Slovenia (above) in my top 10 places to visit and hope perhaps to get back there this year.

I daresay I will post as and when I can, depending on the vagaries of the internet while I am away.  It’s always a bit hit and miss with ATnT.

gotham girl - It was great to get caught up on your posts! I’ve been in Mexico and in a couple of weeks heading to Morocco. Love faraway places…beautiful scene and now I’m putting Slovenia on my travel wish list!

Joanne Thieme Huffman - Travel safely…and, maybe, take a few photos.

Reading

blog_10_mar_2014One of the things that I miss most about not living in NYC anymore is the opportunity to capture raw city life and the documentary style photos that were in abundance there.

This weekend, Asheville provided a few chances to capture people out and about in the street…..

Reading, by all means!!

Bren - Love the black and whites, raw and real

Joanne Thieme Huffman - I love following a theme in photos. These make a nice set.

Chasing Water (falls)

blog_09_mar_2014

The first day in weeks where it was sunny and warm.  Warm enough to warrant getting out of bed at 7am and stowing gear in the car and heading two hours up the road to DuPont State Park to check out Hooker Falls.  It’s a good time of year to visit with your camera.  The tourists have not arrived and the locals are still cold enough to stay tucked up at home.  And  ……..the Park Rangers are not yet on deck so you can sneak off trail and get some shots that you would not otherwise be able to get during the busy season!

There were oodles of fly fishermen (and women) around today, catching trout apparently!  Standing right in the middle of the river in their waders, just right where you did not want them to be if you were taking a photograph.  Thankfully they wiggle about a bit and since I was taking mostly long exposures, they kind of disappear!

I was pretty patient with my camera today.  Barely shot 100 pix for the outing and have figured that I need to shoot more bracketed exposures to get the waterfalls just right.  You smooth and blur the water with the Long Exposure to the extent that you end up with a lot of blown out highlights, so it’s a fine line to walk, especially on a sunny day and of course I’d left my ND LE cheat sheet in the other camera bag so that did not help!

Best of all it was just lovely to be out and about, hiking in the mountains in the sunshine and just enjoying “being”!

joanne thieme huffman - Love the dreamy look of the moving water.

Bren - These are spectacular ! Bet they would be amazing printed on metal

Rose Petal Play

blog_08_mar_2014Whipped out the Macro and a couple of studio lights and had a bit of fun playing with roses this afternoon –  Tinkering with depth of field, moving the lights to get the shadows where I wanted them and just trying to make the most of their wonderfully natural perfection.  Not as easy as you would think!

Enjoy your weekend, with a bit of luck we might see some ‘natural’ light tomorrow and a chance to get outdoors!!! Yay!

Alison - Thank you OXOX M

Unfurling

blog_07_marB_2014The only way that we can live, is if we grow.

The only way that we can grow is if we change.

The only way that we can change is if we learn.

The only way we can learn is if we are exposed.

And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open.

(C.Joybell C).

My Black and White Online Class is drawing to a close.  The funny thing about teaching is that you usually gain as much as you give.  In thinking about what you will share with students, you have to push the boundaries within yourself and in doing so, perfect your own learning and set yourself greater limits and it’s one of the elements of teaching that reaps me the greatest rewards.

One of my longtime Online (and have met in person) friends Cindy T, recently commented to me that she was enjoying see my growth and change…..  and I like that.  I do feel like I am constantly reaching forward, honing my skills, becoming more adept and thoroughly enjoy sharing and teaching what I know along the way!!  And in the process, finding my OWN voice!!

Joanne Thieme Huffman - I have always loved the give and take of teaching. And, I must add, I have always enjoyed your classes.
