A Little Bygone Glamour

Models Jessica Hughes Queen & Taylor Smith

Re-creating the look of a bygone era today – and the more dramatic lighting styles that graced the images of Greta Garbo and those fabulous Hollywood femmes fatales.

It was a fun shoot as DH and #2 son came along to play as well.  Got quite the laugh from one of the models when she realised she was being photographed by 3 cameras from the same family!!

Museums and Art

With #2 son here and a few days away from the work grind for DH we have been exploring museums and tripping here and there to catch some Artsy eye candy.

The Bechtler Museum in Charlotte proved to be a bit of a disappointment.  For the size of the building and all it’s grandeur there was not much of note to see and what should have been a good hour’s worth of viewing proved to be a 20 minute sprint to get in and out!  The most noteworthy thing I saw was the girl in the window – who was not part of the exhibit!

A trip to Asheville today proved to be far more satisfying.  No museums, but plenty of gallery offerings, one of which was the best I have seen in years and would give many of the large museums a run for their money.  I snapped a few pics while inside and have taken the liberty of  “fiddling” with one of the images I shot.  I’d gladly attribute the artist who created this fantastic art doll, if only I knew the name.  It seemed to be the one piece sans, ticket or price tag.  She stood nearly 3 ft tall and was absolutely gorgeous – and would have definitely have come home with me if I could have afforded her.

For now I’ll leave you with the Lady and Her Bird (my caption) …….

(I apologise in advance if I offend the artist by taking some creative license with their work and if anyone knows who might have created the sculpture then I will gladly append the appropriate details.)

Author’s Note: It seems that the doll artist in question might be Akira Blount, deceased in 2013.

Lucy Smith - Looks to me the artist is Akira Blount. A wonderful doll maker.

Susan - hi, I love what you have made. The Original “doll sculpture ” is totally amazing! Do you sell your adaptations of others art, or is it just for you? In looking at the picture of the Art Gallery, it would be a fun one to go to. Thank you Susan

Happy Thanksgiving

blog_28_nov2013

Perhaps not your usual imagery fare for Thanksgiving but it’s what is on the top of the heap and newly created!  A composite from some images taken at the East State Penitentiary and the model shoot last weekend.

(Model Hunter Evans, Make Up by Whitney Mears)

I’m thankful for friends and family, the safe arrival in the US of #2 Son and many many other things, not the least of which is being able to indulge my creative passions as and when I may!

I hope you all have a splendid Turkey Day, surrounded by those you wish to be with and can look forward to the Holiday Season with a glimmer and glint in your eyes!

Mist and Rain – Life Lakely V9

blog_27_nov2013

Grey and rainy.  The Lake was totally obscured for most of the day, filled with low flung scudding clouds that made for quite the ethereal landscape.  I tucked the camera and tripod under the eaves, slapped on a couple of ND filters and took some long exposure shots.

I shall miss this ever changing vista – in all it’s moods … as last night we exchanged contracts to buy a house.  Not far from here and on the Lake but not quite the same stunning views.
As with all things in life there are upsides and downsides, trading a little lake scenery for much more space and loads of room to set up a proper studio and workshop venue!
Not QUITE happy dancing yet, as until the ink is dry on the Closing Docs and I have my key in hand, it’s still all up in the air!! (just being Realistic rather than pessimistic!) … so fingers crossed!

gotham girl - Fingers crossed for you as well! Yeah to a studio!! I will miss this view though! But I know you’ll make up for it in other ways. Stunning image!

Surreal Tea with Rabbit Cake

blog_26_nov2013

(Models Trey Hocutt, Hunter Evans.  Makeup Whitney Mears)

Messing around with a few of my images from yesterday.  TeaPartyMadness_sooc

This is the base image for “rabbit cake”  Lots of work done and it’s not perhaps quite finished.
What did I do?  A bunch of sharpening and image detail enhancing – almost to the point of ridiculous, but that was really the idea!
Copied and pasted the table to extend it in both directions.
Copied a saucer and added a new head onto it.  Refined the selection and added some drop shadows.
Added another teacup in the bottom right hand, added a fill layer to put some extra “blood” in there and used some blood brushes to daub some blood sploshes about.
Added some miscellaneous blood splashes to the cups and pots.
Dropped in the clock, masked it out and added a curves adjustment to darken it down.  Copied and pasted the hands  few times for creative effect.
Changed the text on the clock.  Filter>Blur, Opacity reduced.  And copied and pasted the clock hands a few times as well.
Multiple curves adjustments to get the light right on the faces and some dodge and burn as well.

Kind of fun to pull it all together and there are still some tweaks to be made…..

Chris - I love these spooky ones a lot!
