Less Than Black and White

blog_27a_oct_2013

We cruised Charlotte Uptown tonight.  A final scope out of the “light” before my workshop next weekend.  The City was all agog with Halloween Pub crawlers who all seemed to have shopped for the same Comicon Theme!  Lots of Super Heroes, Smurfs and large men in Green Suits!  Gotta love an Irish Pub that makes the Bouncers dress the part!

And even less Black and White with a visit to the Green which always netts some interesting images to work with and a little photoshoppery never hurts ….. right?  A combo of a footpath sculpture and the odd high rise nearby (with a dab of text and texture).

…. Thinking treasure hunt and challenge for the workshop crowd …. and a little twinkle in my eye, growing at the thought …… what think you?

Alison - All sounds very interesting,I know the participants at your workshop will have a ball, and enjoy every moment. You are a fantastic teacher. OXOX

gotham girl - I think this is all way cool!

Joanne Thieme Huffman - I bet your class will be fantastic. I really love the sun image.

Chris - Every time I come here you have either: left for somewhere else, ARE somewhere else, or just returned from somewhere else! Woman, you are a whirlwind! Your electrolytes are going to need replacing soon!!

Leaps of Faith

blog_24_oct_2013

Royally sidetracked today from working on preparations for my Black and White Workshop in November – upgrading to OSX Maverick and then taking care of all the attendant nonsense that that sort of thing seems to engender.  For whatever reason each time I do an OS upgrade one of my email addresses seems to trash itself and the server settings get all bent out of shape and a lot of hair pulling ensues to get it sorted out.

I’m happy to report that there are only 2 spots left in the BW Workshop and given that I am setting up all this sort of stuff on my own and not relying on retreat/conference conveners to support everything, am pretty happy with the way things are shaping up.

The “Leaper of Faith” was snapped on the shores of Lake Geneva, one of those things where you focus the object and make it look like it’s interacting with the background and not too much photoshoppery apart from the BW conversion!

Other than that, I’m off to sleep.  The “Lake” is a rollicking mess, busy winds and chilly, so the heaters in the house are going full tilt for the first time – note to self, to find the duvet tomorrow and stick it on the bed!  For now, a mountain of 3 cats will suffice!

Joanne Thieme Huffman - I bet it will be a great workshop.

gotham girl - Thank you for my morning laugh! Love your writing. I just had one of those hair pulling afternoons myself. ha! Oh how I want to take one of your courses one day. One day! Perhaps something you offer next year and when I’m in Virginia I could come down and partake. I so want to learn more about b&w. Keep snuggling with the cats!

Embracing The Light

blog_22_oct_2013

A quaint, rather run-down hut on the cusp of the mountains between Slovenia and Italy – the mist seeping from the roof and the dawn light silhouetted in the trees …..

Brings to mind a topical quote ….

“Light makes photography.  Embrace light.  Admire it.  Love it.  But above all, know light.  Know it for all you are worth, and you will know the key to photography.”
George Eastman.

gotham girl - Oh how true! So true! And you know it well. Brilliant capture!

joanne thieme huffman - Great atmospheric photo.

Shades of Amber and Blue

blog_21_oct_2013

I’m finally back in Charlotte after a 2 hour drive from Strasbourg to Frankfurt and then a jolly old 9 hour plane ride with “US Scare”, enjoying (???) their less than lack lustre service and even less enjoyment with 50 minute queues to get through immigration.
I now get why they berate you about leaving your cell phone off or threaten you with death if you take pictures whilst in the immigration line  …Posted on FB it would be a total embarassment!  A hopeless testament to US efficiency indeed!
Especially given my trusty PINKY Red GB passport, where I swan through European cities without so much as a hiccup or blink.  Shame it can’t be the same for the country where I am supposed to call “home”!!
Just as well I don’t sport an ALIEN complex other than when I am travelling back to the States or trying to get my driver’s license!  UGH!

Anyhow, I am partially unpacked,  75GB of photos mostly downloaded and heading to bed to try and catch the 6 hours of the day that I am missing….. leaving you with a snap of a 5am sunrise in Slovenia…..

I can guarantee that I won’t be up that early tomorrow!!!!

See you later gators………………….

Joanne Thieme Huffman - Welcome back home. Beautiful photo. Hope you get lots of sleep.

Bren - Sounds like re-entry is the trickiest part of traveling! Amazing photo journey you’ve shared of this trip, love seeing and hearing about it

gotham girl - Welcome home! Can not wait to see more of your photos. What a trip! This one is beyond breathtaking! Reminds me of the Blue Ridge Mountains…

Postcards From Switzerland

blog_19a_oct_2013

Well, old and new place visited hereabouts, including a trip back down memory lane to Sierre and Crans Montana.  Many changes have been wrought since I lived here – not surprisingly I guess, but my memories of vast mountain meadows and quaint mountain top cafes have been overtaken by progress and population.  Fortunately the mountains remain as vivid and grand as ever.

blog_19b_oct_2013

Thankfully the passage of time has done little to change the landscape or feel of Gruyere, where the Medieval town remains as always and still sports delicious food, including the timeless Meringues Glace avec Framboise et Creme – to DIE for!

blog_19c_oct_2013

We capped the day off with a 2 hour cruise around Lake Geneva, catching the last rays of the sun as we strolled along the promenade before stopping at Harry’s Bar to enjoy a bite to eat and listen to some live music – a grand farewell to a lovely city.

Pointing north to Strasbourg tomorrow!
(and sorry about the typo in the caption above, but it’s late and too tired to fix it!)

Alison - Memory lane can be a great walk, glad it all hasn’t changed too much
OXOX M

Joanne Thieme Huffman - Such beautiful images. Glad your happy memories are being reinforced.

gotham girl - Beautiful! Brings back so many memories from my visit to Switzerland. My husband and I were married in Gwindlevald some 20 years ago. I wonder how much has changed there!

Bren - breathtaking! Vivid and crisp
